About Sluice (TableViews)

• The TableView Protocol, an easy method for two tools to communicate using tables and keep notified of changes.

Development Tools

• Development Environment: Anything that works with java 1.2. A very good option is NetBeans, which is free for non-commercial use. You can download NetBeans from www.netbeans.com/register.html.

 
• Version Control System: The sieve repository is controlled by CVS. Since CVS command is quite contorted, you can use ice's jCVS graphical java client for CVS, which makes much more simpler to browse, check-in and out, etc. jCVS is free and can be downloaded from ice's web site, http://www.ice.com/java/jcvs.
  jCVS is already installed on simon in /usr/local/jcvs/application/. Type jcvs to start it.

To use jCVS use the following settings:

CVS Module	sieve or sosci, depending on the code you want to work with.
CVS Server	simon.cs.vt.edu
CVS Repository	/home/nie/cvsroot/ (don't forget last slash!)
Local Directory (if checking-out)	Wherever you want to put your code.



• Web Browser: To run the tutorials of the statistics project and the sieve inetBench,You will need the java plug-in 1.2. You can use either IE or Nestscape Navigator.

 
• UI Design Helper Tool: If you ever had to design an interface using GridBagLayout, you know it is a nightmare to get it right. GridBagger is a tool that lets you visually design the arrangement of components inside the GridBagLayout, and generates the code to get that arrangement. Download it from here.
   
• GNU Make: To compile sieve you need GNU make.
  • GNU Make for Unix: go to GNU Web Site.
  • GNU Make for Windows/NT: You can get a free Unix-like environment that includes GNU make thanks to CYGNUS. Go there and look for CYGWIN (that's the name of the Unix-like environment).

Locally Developed Applications

Sieve Sieve is a Java-based collaborative work environment enphasizing collaborative visualization.
Composite Block and Plane A physics simulation and analysis tools.  This applet demonstrates how to combine Sieve components to create a complex application.  Source code is available from the applet pages listed below. Because of differing security restrictions among browsers, there are three versions of this applet. Netscape  Internet Explorer HotJava and Appletviewer
Flexible JAMM (Java Applets Made Multiuser) Flexible JAMM is an application-sharing system that allows multiple users to simultaneously work in a legacy, single-user application.
